Best places to live in Devon
As a property finder I am frequently asked where are the best places to live in Devon? Having personally relocated from London to Devon, I have always had a weak spot for a certain location; this location in my opinion has remained a firm favourite of mine as one of the best places to live in Devon.
The village of Shaldon
Located on the south-eastern coast of Devon, opposite the town of Teighmouth on the south bank of the river Teigh and surrounded with beaches, Shaldon is a lovely location – and with recent renovations some might say this is becoming the new Salcombe!
You can get here by Shaldon Bridge or there is a passenger ferry linking Shaldon with Teighmouth, which runs most of the time. However, if you are after a busy nightlife and the hustle and bustle of City life, this won’t be the place for you (you will need to go to Torquay for this), but you will find fine eateries, lovely pubs and local shops in this village.
Is Shaldon the best place to live in Devon for young families?
There are many factors which underline why Shaldon is the perfect place for young families; Shaldon Primary School has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, there is also Trinity School in Teignmouth, an independent day and boarding school, from nursery age through to six form years. Also in Teignmouth is Hazeldown Primary School, rated “good” by Ofsted.
For secondary schools, you will find amongst others, Teignmouth Community School, Rated “good”, Our Lady and St Patricks Roman Catholic School.
For an even wider choice of schools, Exeter has also excellent schools and is only 30 mins drive away.
In addition to this the countryside surrounding Shaldon is beautiful and makes for a perfect setting for family hunters, which gives home buyers different options at different price points.
Property for sale in Shaldon, Devon
There is a wide range of property to find in Shaldon; A one-bedroom apartment can be yours for around £130,000. Four and five-bedroom houses are selling from £450,000 to £850,000 including double fronted terraced houses for £590,000 and a detached bungalow with a swimming pool for £625,000. More sizable six plus bedrooms detached houses are available from £900,000.
This location is also a very popular area for holiday cottages and apartments which potentially makes this an excellent place to invest in for the right type of property. A two-bedroom cottage can be bought here from around £300,000 and with the holiday let season getting longer, these holiday lets are now occupied for much longer periods each year, which is great news for investors and local tourism alike.
